Across urban settings, products containing pyrethroids are used by homeowners, public agencies, and private applicators to control populations of various insect pests. Though these insecticides are applied in low volumes, any remaining residues may be transported via runoff and accumulate in various sites, such as stormwater structures and water bodies downstream of outfalls, potentially threatening public and environmental health. To better understand the extent of pyrethroid contamination in urban storm drains, water samples were collected from urban catch basins in seven regions across California. Additionally, various media, including water, algae, and sediment, were sampled from stormwater structures in Los Angeles County to examine differences in pyrethroid distribution between structure types. Pyrethroid concentrations, detection frequencies, and their relation to various environmental factors will be discussed.
