Well-defined intermetallic compound (IMC) catalysts composed of late transition metals and early p-block elements present unique surface chemistry that deviates considerably from monometallic transition metal catalysts. The understanding of the unique surface chemistry of IMC catalysts is still developing. This study will highlight the surface chemistry of Ni+Ga IMCs in the wet reforming of propane for the production of H2 and CO or H2 and CO2. High surface area, supported nanoparticle Ni+Ga IMCs with phase pure bulk and bulk-like particle surface compositions allow for clear connections between catalytic activity and key mechanistic steps in the reaction. Of specific interest is the efficiency of oxidation steps to clean the catalyst surface of C/CHx species to limit coke formation and control CO vs. CO2 selectivity. The fate of atomic H in H2 formation or C/CHx hydrogenation for unselective CH4 formation will also be discussed. Composition-activity relationships developed in this study are also transferable to the design of catalysts for the reforming of oxygenates and waste chemicals produced in biomass refining efforts.
