Understanding electronic energy transfer and charge transfer in multichromophoric assemblies is an area of active research that spans the fields of natural and artificial photosynthesis, photocatalysis, and photovoltaics, and is essential for developing and designing new technologies for solar energy conversion. Due to the complexity of multichromophoric assemblies, where many chemically identical chromophores are tightly packed in inhomogeneous environments, researchers have focused on model systems that serve as structurally simpler alternatives that can be chosen to probe specific processes. Though there has been much progress in this area there are still unanswered questions regarding energy transfer and charge transfer, specifically focusing on the role of the local environment and nuclear motion in facilitating these photoinduced processes. In this talk, I will focus on our recent studies in this area where we investigate different dipyrrin based light harvesting chromophores, including BODIPYs and pi-extended metallodipyrrin complexes. We apply ultrafast pump-probe and two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy to these systems to map population transfer, characterize nuclear motion strongly coupled to electronic excitation, and determine how solvent interactions impact these processes.
