In the effort to develop non-noble transition metal solid compound catalysts as high surface area, supported nanoparticles, one must understand the surface chemistry of supports towards much more reactive constituent elements and the role of element avilability and diffusion on nanoparticle formation. In this presentation, we will discuss the synthesis of supported intermetallic compounds (IMC) composed of 1st-row transition metals and boron-group elements. Investigations focused upon developing a fundamental understanding of the effect of precursor choice, support reactivity, H<sub>2</sub> chemical potential, and annealing on the formation of phase pure nanoparticles with bulk-like surface composition (as measured by high-sensitivity low-energy ion scattering, HS-LEIS). A well-developed understanding of Ni+Ga IMC synthesis will be presented along with a developing understanding of boride, aluminide, and indide IMCs with a focus on producing high surface area, supported nanoparticles with phase pure bulk and bulk-like particle surface termination.
