Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are rising, which is causing irreversible negative impacts through global climate change - advances in CO2 sequestration materials are of dire need. Amino-functionalized nanostructured silica has promising abilities for adsorption of CO2 and has been used extensively in the literature. This work focuses on CAB-O-SIL® (cab), a micro particulate fumed silica. Initially primary amine groups are attached to the cab base, through post synthetic grafting, and then further functionalization is afforded via reaction with the terminal amine group. The ligands used for further functionalization include tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), and 1,2-epoxybutane functionalized TEPA (EB-TEPA). TEPA provides a multitude of primary and secondary amines which are ideal for the desirable high CO2 capacity. The addition of the epoxybutane to the TEPA allows for augmentation of the thermal stability of the compound. A multifunctional material was synthesized that contains surface primary, and secondary amine groups as well as 2-butanol; it is hypothesized that this will improve thermal stability similar to the TEPA and EB-TEPA functionalized materials. The materials were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and elemental analysis (EA). Capacity determination as well as thermal stability tests are ongoing.
