Introduction of oxygen vacancies in tungsten oxides can lead to profound modifications in the optoelectronics properties that the material exhibits. In the case of tungsten oxide, oxygen vacancies introduce a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect that promotes the absorption of near infrared (NIR) region of visible light. It is reported that oxygen vacancies are multifunctional in which they can increase carrier densities and promote the chemisorption and activation of alcohols. Previous work has shown that photocatalytic alkylation of arenes using benzylic alcohols can be achieved under 660 nm LED light illumination.  In this work we explore the use of WO2.7 as a photocatalyst for the deoxygenation of alcohols to form new carbon-carbon bonds and found that alkylation of arenes can be achieved with a variety alcohols under white light conditions.
