As PFAS become more prevalent and dispersed in the environment, technologies to capture and remove them will become of increasing importance. These surfactants aggregate, form films, and consequently change solubility and adsorption properties making traditional adsorbent characterizations difficult to interpret. Herein we model the impacts of porosity and 3D structuring of graphene-oxide-based sorption materials on the selectivity and transport of various PFAS in the matrix. We found trends in the work function with respect to pore size and PFAS size are not monotonic! Optimization towards selectivity of certain length and headgroup of PFAS can be achieved through modulation of the 3D materials. We hope these insights will enhance designs of next-generation materials for the removal of PFAS.
