Control of basic structural features in polymers, such as topology and chain conformation, has drastic implications on downstream physical properties. Sometimes, these behaviors are unanticipated based on the molecular structures alone. For example, the removal of chain ends transforms linear polymers into cyclic polymers; the number of monomeric units can remain constant while the effective size in solution decreases. In addition, the introduction of seemingly rigid monomers with unexpected flexibility into a stiff polymer backbone leads to anamolous thermal behavior. In this talk, recent work that falls into both of these categories will be discussed.
