We have explored the redox chemistry of a pyridyltriazole analogue, [Ru(trp)(bpt)(H2O)](PF6)2 (trp= 2,2’:6',2"-terpyridine, bpt= benzylpyridyltriazole), and characterized it as a Water oxidation catalyst (WOC). [Ru(trp)(bpt)(H2O)](PF6)2 is formed as two isomers: the “trans-pyridine” isomer, shown in Figure 1(a), shows WOC activity; the other isomer (“trans-triazole”, not shown) is much less active as a WOC. In WOC experiments with trans-py-[Ru(trp)(bpt)(H2O)](PF6)2 and excess Ce(IV), the solutions gradually turn green. We have shown that the green solutions contain unreacted Ru(II) (orange-brown) complex and the blue-green oxo-bridged Ru(III) dimer [(trp)(bpt)Ru-O-Ru(trp)(bpt)]4+ (Figure 1(b)). X-ray analysis of this dimer yields a Ru-Ru distance of 3.722(2) Å. The redox properties of the new Ru(III) oxo complex will be presented.
