Bamboo is a fast-growing and sustainable material which is one of the most important non-woody biomass in the world. It has been known as an alternative raw material for replacing woody biomass. This study evaluates the effect of low-shear kneading process on micronization/fibrillation of bamboo and softwood pulp. The two types of the fibrils produced by the alkali kneading were compared in terms of image analysis, fiber size analysis, freeness, WRV(water retention value), and strength properties. In this study, a new route to produce microfibers from bamboo pulp will be discussed.
