The interactions between colloidal materials and biological environments play an important role in the applications of these materials in biomedicine. The ability to functionalise colloids with biomolecules that can promote recognition, modulate signalling, or provide affinity is therefore key. In this talk, I will present our efforts to develop new bioconjugation strategies both on the surface and in the interior of colloids, with a focus on responsive, dynamic covalent linkages, and versatile strategies for site-specific conjugation that can be applied to diverse biomolecule targets. Core to this work has been studies of the underlying conjugation chemistry, with exploration of the reaction kinetics, equilibria, and stimuli responsiveness of small molecule models playing an important role in allowing us to understand and optimise more complex bioconjugation and material functionalisation steps.
