Wood veneer can be subjected to delignification, monomer impregnation and polymerization to form biocomposites of high optical transmittance. These cellulosic biocomposites are interesting not only for their application potential, but also for their potential nanocomposite nature and the many functionalization possibilities they offer in a material of high mechanical performance. For instance, dye addition makes lasing possible, plasmonic nanoparticles give structural color, quantum dots make light emitting diodes possible, thermochromic and photochromic additives can be combined for stimuli-responsive function, electrochromic polymers allow smart window devices and phase change materials can penetrate the wood cell wall and provide efficient heat storage properties. Controlled nanostructures are important in most of these cases, where additive agglomeration and optical defects must be avoided. By cell wall modification or specific preparation routes, it is possible to bring even hydrophobic monomers into the wood cell wall.<br/>In all photonics applications, light scattering mechanisms will control performance and thickness effects on transmittance. Although potential mechanisms can be listed, it has been difficult to quantify relative contributions. Through a combination of theoretical modeling and systematic experimentation, this challenge can be addressed. The results provide guidance with respect to materials design efforts and better control of properties in transparent composites.<br/>Finally, cellulosic composites are widely accepted as materials where increased use would contribute to sustainable development. This statement may not always be correct, though. The detailed contributions of different biocomposites to sustainable development are discussed, with particular focus on eco-indicators.
