Greenhouse gases (GHG) have resulted in adverse climatic conditions impacting humankind while posing a challenge to reduce the emission. Effective utilization of GHG and finding an alternative cleaner source of energy is need of an hour. CO and CO2 hydrogenation to methanol is a one-step-two-target approach to fulfill the increasing world energy demand with zero carbon footprint. Methanol as a backbone of petrochemical industries has versatile usage as fuel, solvent, and hydrogen storage. This study focuses on CO/CO2 hydrogenation to methanol in stirred tank slurry reactor (three-phase system). Cu-based catalysts with MgO and ZnO support are synthesized by the combustion-induced method. 99% methanol selectivity was observed over MgO supported Cu catalyst at 50 bar pressure, 220 °C temperature with diglyme solvent. Catalytic activity was correlated by the various characterization of catalytic systems like Thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier Transform-Infrared, X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, High resolution- Transmission Electron Microscopy Temperature-Programmed Reduction and N2 physisorption techniques. DFT study on Cu/MgO catalytic system for the discussion of reaction pathway and possible shift of reaction mechanism paradigm in slurry reactors are explored.
