Recent drivers have accelerated commercial adoption of some types of renewable fuels, while other types have seen less adoption for various reasons. In this presentation, some of the technical rationale behind recent commercial progression of renewable fuel projects will be covered, as well as some of the barriers to adoption of other pathways that are more technically challenged. Renewable diesel via hydroprocessing and the hydrovapor upgrading (HVU) concept, a pyrolysis process with catalytic vapor phase upgrading first developed at Phillips 66, will be discussed as two processes with distinctly different catalytic challenges.
