Different methods of adding titanium to mesoporous zirconium oxide were investigated to form mixed metal oxide catalysts. Titanium isopropoxide (TIP), potassium titanate (K2O + TiO2), and magnesium titanate (MgTiO2) were explored as doping agents to synthesize ionic liquid-templated, mesoporous titania-zirconia catalysts. Catalysts were characterized using nitrogen physisorption at 77K and IR spectroscopy. Investigation of catalytic activity was conducted through the condensation reaction of 2-furaldehyde and acetone. Fractions of the reaction were collected and analyzed through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS). GCMS data suggests that mesoporous, mixed metal oxide catalysts from TIP demonstrate the highest catalytic activity.
