The invention of the continuous liquid interface production (CLIP) 3D printing technology, published in <i>Science</i> in 2015, represented a significant departure to traditional layer-by-layer approaches to stereolithography 3D printing—enabling more rapid printing with a wider range of polymers, as well as better part mechanical performance via the ability to print isotropic parts. CLIP has since been used widely to manufacturing products, including the large-scale production of midsoles for the adidas Futurecraft 4D shoes, mass-customized dental products, next-generation football helmets by Riddell, and parts on Ford production vehicles. However, limitations on the process stemming from mass transport issues have limited both printable areas at high speeds and the viscosity of the resins used. Moreover, using CLIP with composites or multiple materials simultaneously has been heretofore impossible. This talk will describe our work to investigate the fundamental mass transport physics underlying these limitations, our ability to correlate experimental and simulated results to real print outcomes, and a new hybrid printing approach, injection CLIP (iCLIP), that helps overcome these limitations through active mechanical control of fluid flow during printing.
