Anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are contributing to global climate change. To minimize devasting effects on the global climate, we must develop new technologies to minimize emissions of the four major greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, and hydrofluorocarbons. While most efforts to date have focused on minimizing carbon dioxide emissions, the other three greenhouse gases contribute "unavoidable" emissions that are contributing to climate change. For example, nitrous oxide is generating from agriculatural practices and from nitric acid production, whereas hydrofluorocarbons are the byproducts of fluoropolymers such as Teflon. Herein, we will detail strategies to capture the greenhouse gases nitrous oxide and hydrofluorocarbons within metal-organic frameworks. To capture nitrous oxide, we will discuss its interaction with (redox-active) Lewis acidic sites within metal-organic frameworks. To capture hydrofluorocarbons, we will employ halogen-bonding interactions.
