Transition metal (Pd, Ni, Sn, Cu) complexes and clusters form from the reaction of metal salts and QSn (Q = quinolin-8-yl) synthons. Our original intent was the use of Q2Sn or QSnCl as a bidentate ligand; however, we observed an apparent redox-transmetalation reaction in all cases. Heterobimetallic (Ni-Sn and Pd-Sn) complexes were obtained from the reaction with in situ generated QSnCl. Copper and palladium clusters were found from reactions of in situ generated Q2Sn and transition metal halides. The identification of the clusters from single crystal X-ray studies prompted us to investigate their electronic structure using computational methods. We aim to study the metal cooperativity upon binding Lewis bases (F-, CN-, pyridine) to the novel Ni-Sn and Ni-Pd bimetallic complexes. We envision the application of the bimetallic complexes and clusters as catalysts as a long-term goal of the study.
