Spurred by advances in photoredox catalysis and electrocatalysis, dual-catalytic platforms for Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling have recently garnered significant interest in the synthetic community. Unfortunately, the mechanistic underpinnings of many of these reactions are unclear due to the fleeting nature of the active catalytic intermediates. Here we report the use of pulse radiolysis and spectroelectrochemistry to generate nickel intermediates relevant to synthetically important nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. This approach further enables the interrogation elusive open-shell and closed-shell elementary steps.
