Catalysis with Earth-abundant first-row transition metals is becoming a vital area of study.  Early/late heterobimetallic complexes are being studied to help overcome the propensity of base metals to undergo one-electron processes rather than the two-electron processes needed for bond cleavage and formation.  A series of Ti/M (M = Fe, Ni, Cu) heterobimetallic complexes has been synthesized using a bis(phosphinoamide) ligand scaffold.  Catalytic C-C coupling reactions have been greatly studied, and mechanistic insight into Kumada coupling using a Ti/Ni complex will shed light on how metal-metal bonding can influence catalytic reactivity.
