Growing accessibility of research-based assessment instruments has been one of the important developments over the past several decades for chemistry education research and practice.  In particular, assessments of student outcomes that extend beyond chemistry content (e.g. attitude, motivation) have appeared in the literature and are finding their way into application.  How should we think about the utility of these tools over time?  Is it “developed and done” so that our task is to identify constructs for which we don’t have instruments and develop something?  Or is it “continual improvement” where we revisit to enhance the value?  This talk will look at several extant instruments to gain some insight regarding how the community approaches utilization over time.  This review will incorporate work conducted by Jennifer Lewis and students.
