According to World Meteorological Organisation 2011-2020 is the warmest decade on record and global mean temperatures have risen 1.2 degree celcius since pre-industrial times. Water has the maximum heat storage capacity of any compound and thus a large amount of heat can be stored in the oceans. The warming due to increase in greenhouse gases (GHG) is not realized instantaneously due to time scales associated with heat storage in the ocean. The attributed time for the near surface ocean temperature to adjust in response to climate forcing is nearly a decade. This oceanic buffer has shielded the humans from rapid changes in climate and since 1970s the oceans have absorbed more than 93% excess heat from GHG emissions. The rate of ocean warming and heat uptake has almost doubled and is most likely due to anthropogenic forcing. It is estimated that climate change will aggravate intensity of cyclonic storms in North Indian Ocean with rise in sea surface temperatures. The recent tropical cyclone Tauktae and earlier cyclones like Nilofar, Chapala, Megh and Vayu are just to name a few. This paper will present detailed analysis of cyclonic disturbance data of Arabian Sea and investigate the probable impacts of climate change on upsurge in cyclone frequency in this region with corresponding socio-economic implications.
