Over the last few decades, many model compounds have been designed and prepared for understanding the energy and electron transfer processes in photosynthesis. In most of these model systems, porphyrins evolved ideal building blocks because they are structurally similar to the chlorophyll pigments. Moreover, their rich redox and optical properties can be tuned easily through the substitution of appropriate functional groups in peripheral positions or the insertion of a wide variety of elements in its cavity. Within porphyrins, transition metal porphyrins have been widely studied for mimicking these systems. However, non-transition or main-group porphyrin derivatives have not been well explored for their use in artificial photosynthetic systems. This is rather surprising because the main-group element porphyrin derivatives have unique intrinsic redox properties, and some of these porphyrins could be excellent candidates for mimicking a variety of molecular components of natural photosystems.  In this context, I will discuss the photophysical and electrochemical properties of some of the main-group porphyrin systems, especially group 15 element-based porphyrin systems.
