The youngest of five children and born on the 5th day of February, I fell in love with science during a 5th-period high school chemistry class. The enthusiasm I have for science, research and education has not ceased since. As part of the ACS WCC Rising Star Award symposium, I will explain how my fascination with boron and interests in five valence electrons (i.e., nitrogen) set the course of my career. I will review five evolving aspects of my research program that seek to establish design guidelines for novel functional materials with tunable properties through molecular self-assembly. Additionally, I will discuss the importance of mentorship, highlight collaborators and spotlight some wonderfully talented researchers who have made life worth living.
