Student performance in large enrollment gateway General Chemistry courses has a huge impact on student engagement, motivation, persistence and progress to graduation. In Spring 2021, FIU introduced a new fully online “Online Live” modality with approximately 50% of the course delivered asynchronously and 50% of the course delivered in a synchronous meeting pattern on “Zoom”. The instructors from both, face-to-face and Online Live, modalities collaborated to create a common course, common syllabus and common summative assessments called mastery checkpoints (MCs) for students to have similar experiences. The design of the online course differed from the face-to-face course to account for and adapt to the new modality, but the core content remained unchanged. At FIU, General Chemistry is taught using the curriculum <i>Chemistry Life Universe and Everything</i> (CLUE) in an active learning setting using methods such as personal response systems for formative assessments and group activities facilitated by the instructor and trained undergraduate peer Learning Assistants (LAs). Student understanding and performance within these two modalities were compared using formative and summative assessments along with surveys and preliminary data from this study will be presented.
