Electron-transfer rates from flat, colloidal CdSe nanocrystals to appended methyl viologen acceptors are studied. Wurtzite CdSe quantum platelets (QPs) and quantum belts (QBs) are optimized with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), and then asymmetrically substituted methyl viologen compounds (containing a methyl group on one end of the compound and a two, four, or six hydrocarbon chain terminated with an amine on the other end of the compound) are titrated onto the QPs and QBs to quench the PL. The rate of electron transfer from the QP or QB to each asymmetrically substituted methyl viologen electron acceptor ligand is measured via transient absorption spectroscopy (TA). Sample excitation at the band edge (450 nm) avoids intraband-relaxation processes and achieves rise times of the methyl viologen bands in the range of 70 to 110 femtoseconds, which is in accordance with or faster than values reported in literature utilizing similar methyl viologen compounds with other CdSe or CdS based nanocrystals.
