Specifically synthesized liposomes have found value as vehicles for drug delivery. Historically, phospholipids have served as the molecular monomer to build these macromolecules. Over the years our group has specifically modified and altered the phospholipid backbone to construct multilamellar tubes that have shown similar utility as a drug delivery device. Along with the practical application of these liposomes and tubules, the study of their overall formation is of interest. Towards that end, this study focuses on the alteration of the typical phosphatidylcholine head-group to incorporate a Boron component. In doing this alteration it enables us to investigate if such a modification would allow for similar macromolecular formation from a suitably constructed borono-lipid. Additionally, these boron-containing macromolecular containers may find utility in a combined therapy involving drug delivery and Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). This investigation will focus on the preparation of specific borono-lipids with tail variations that will enable us to study the formation of both liposomes and tubules.
