The addition of oxidants to natural waters often results in the production of transient species (e.g., reactive oxygen species, carbon-centered radicals) that initiate chain reactions that result in the transformation of contaminants and formation of potentially toxic byproducts.  Laboratory experiments, theoretical models and kinetics measurements can provide insights into the pathways through which these reactions occur, but observations made under conditions comparable to those encountered in the environment are essential for gaining insight into these complex processes.  Oversimplification of the chemical mechanisms involving radicals can lead to erroneous conclusions and a failure to optimize treatment system performance or protect public health.  By considering examples from the radical chain reactions initiated by activation of hydrogen peroxide and persulfate anion, we can gain insight into ways of avoiding the pitfalls of oversimplification and realizing the full potential of radical reactions.
