A magnetic topological insulator candidate, EuSn2P2, was recently reported by Gui et al. The flux-synthesized samples exhibit significant hole doping. Accordingly, our resistivity measurements confirm the metallic transport behavior in as-synthesized EuSn2P2. Our SQUID magnetometry measurements confirm a Néel temperature of 29.5 K. Here we computationally and experimentally explore cation substitution in RxEu1-xSn2P2, where R is another lanthanide. Preliminary results indicate that the europium compound is the most stable among the ternary lanthanide compounds, but provide some guidance to adjust synthesis conditions to achieve RxEu1-xSn2P2 compounds with varying Fermi levels relative to the band gap. Time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) measurements estimate the Dirac point in the parent compound EuSn2P2 to be 0.5 eV above the Fermi level, five times higher than predicted. We aim to study the effect of magnetic ordering on surface electronic states by donor doping the material to access the Dirac cone. In parallel, competing phases in this unexplored phase space are examined in greater detail.
