The Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument at the European XFEL provides sample environments for both solid and liquid state investigations of chemical systems with femtosecond time-resolution. SCS implements several detection schemes that enable both XAS and RIXS in transmission and diffuse scattering geometries, respectively. Transmission zone plate grating (TZPG) optics are utilized to generate sample and reference beams for shot-noise limited XAS measurements. This has been combined with thin film production technologies to monitor chemical dynamics in the solid state with &lt;50 fs time resolution. The RIXS spectrometer (hRIXS) provides high-energy-resolution (7000 – 10,000 E/ΔE combined with monochromator) for measurements of 3d transition metal L-edges and first row K-edges (500 – 1300 eV). This spectrometer has been commissioned with 3d transition metal oxide samples giving spectrum acquisition times that rival current state of the art synchrotron-based instruments. Liquid jets enable measurements of solution-phase samples for photochemical studies. This talk will highlight recent experiments and summarize current and future instrumentation.
