Chemistry courses at Hunter College are high impact courses for majors, non-majors, and pre-nursing students with a very large enrollment (over 1000 students per year). Laboratories are a required component of the curriculum and students must pass Introductory and General Chemistry laboratories with high grades to get into medical school or nursing programs. In recent years, we realized the need to alter the way our courses were taught to ensure students learning and help improve our laboratory curriculum, yet we were not sure where we needed to adjust. We took advantage of our college required institutional learning outcome (ILO) assessment to gain valuable information regarding general chemistry laboratory courses offered by the department. Our major and non-major laboratory courses were chosen to complete ILO assessment. We aligned the Hunter College general education ILOs to the program and course learning outcomes and were able to close the loop in student learning.  The results of the institutional assessment allowed us to identify the areas where the students were underperforming and to modify them to promote students’ success in the major and STEM.
