Heteroatomic cubanes are molecular models for heterogeneous surfaces and the oxygen evolving complex of photosystem II. Rational synthesis of these models typically requires protracted ligand synthesis and design, or optimization of an ill-defined self-assembly reaction. To remedy these challenges, we envisioned a method to synthesize heteroatomic cubanes that would rely on reactions with preestablished cubane fragments, and simple metal precursors. In this talk, our efforts to synthesize heteroatomic cubanes are discussed and a novel mechanism for the introduction of heteroatoms is presented, along with implications for synthesis of new heteroatomic cobalt oxo cubanes.
