The selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is an essential process for both chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore, the synthesis of efficient, and cost-effective catalysts that meet industrial requirements is of great value. In this paper, the investigation focuses on the effects of promoters, such as ceria, silver, etc., to modify palladium supported on active carbon and alumina for liquid-phase hydrogenation of alkynes, including ethyl phenylpropiolate, diphenyl acetylene, etc., in methanol at room temperature.<br/>The promoter type and concentration, support material, and reduction techniques all have a very critical impact on the catalytic performance regarding the conversion and selectivity. This is likely due to the resulted structure of the formed alloy or oxide solid solution, between a promoter and palladium, and the interaction between metals/metal oxides and the supports before and after reduction and/or non-thermal plasma treatments. The detailed surface and bulk properties of alloy or oxide solid solution will be investigated via pulse chemisorption, temperature programmed reduction, and adsorption/desorption techniques.
