The University of Detroit Mercy’s Chemistry Club established the Shulamith Schlick Lecture Series this past year to highlight the contributions made by women in the scientific community. The lecture series was named in honor of Dr. Shulamith Schlick - a distinguished faculty member of the university’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for many years. The inaugural lecture was held virtually in the winter to maintain the COVID-19 precautions during that time. The aim of the Schlick Lecture Series is to spotlight a female scientist who would present their field of research while sharing their experiences of working in the STEM field. This year’s speaker was Dr. Amanda Bryant-Friedrich. Her talk focused on an anti-viral drug development as well as her storied career. Afterwards, the audience had the opportunity to interact with Dr. Bryant-Friedrich by asking her questions. Our purpose for this lecture series is not only to bring awareness to the challenges faced by women in science, but to emphasize that our diverse student population is the bright future and change needed in the field.
