Carbohydrates are implicated in a wide range of biological functions from cellular recognition and interaction to identification as antigenic determinants. Here, our research seeks to synthesize glycopolymer derived therapeutics effective against viral binding and infection. Dendrimeric cores are ideal candidates for this study considering their multivalency and pharmodynamic properties. Furthermore, carbohydrates, particularly those that have been sulfated, have exhibited inhibitory activity towards early stages of viral binding and infection. The present work seeks to optimize the eight-step synthesis of the octavalent dendrimer core and further evaluate its biological activity once coupled with the synthetically derived carbohydrates. Future work will involve 3D characterization of the glycopolymers via NMR spectroscopy and evaluation of their efficacy through a variety of bioassays to determine the potential anti-viral applications.
