Pyridyl- and pyrazolylformamidine ligands can be complexed with transition metal complexes to form N-metallocyclic carbene precursors analogous to azolium salts, used for the preparation of N-heterocyclic carbenes. Treatment with base produces the N-metallocyclic carbene (NMC) which can then be coordinated to another metal, producing a bimetallic complex. The modular synthesis of NMC should allow for the synthesis of ligands with a wide range of electronic and steric properties.
