Trivalent lanthanide ions have been a hot topic in fields such as imaging and molecular magnets given their unique photophysical and magnetic properties. These properties arise from the nature of the 4f valence electrons that have minimal bonding interaction with the ligand field. As a result, each lanthanide has unique properties, including long-lived and characteristic luminescence that is interesting for optical imaging and magnetic anisotropy relevant for magnetic resonance imaging or molecular magnetism. One class of coordination compound that has been promising for applications related to Ln3+ ions are metallamacrocycles known as metallacrowns. Examples of metallacrowns that have potential regarding photophysical applications are rather frequent within the past ten years, so there has been a push for more examples of Ln3+ encapsulating metallacrowns that can sensitize lanthanide-based photoemission. Herein, we report new metallacrown compositions that feature encapsulated Ln3+ ions for this exact purpose.
