<i>N</i>-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have, since their discovery in the early 1990s, become a ubiquitous class of ligands for the isolation of reactive inorganic species. They benefit from facile tuning of the steric and donor/acceptor properties, and NHC complexes have been isolated for the vast majority of the naturally occurring elements on the periodic table. In this presentation, I will detail the early advances made in my lab towards the synthesis and reactivity of group I and II adducts of NHCs, with a focus on developing soluble alkali and alkaline-earth hydride complexes for catalysis.
