An Ugi-Smiles multicomponent coupling reaction utilizes amine, aldehyde, isocyanide, and phenol components in a highly atom-efficient, one-pot process to produce a-aminoamide products. When a conjugated aldehyde is used as a reaction component, a novel five-component oxa-Michael Ugi-Smiles reaction was observed, with the alcoholic solvent participating in the reaction. Efforts are focused on exploring the reaction pathway and optimizing the observed five-component coupling through reaction monitoring and exploring variations in the alcohol, amine, and aldehyde components.
