CO2 reduction to useful feedstocks has been achieved in biological systems. An attractive C1 product of CO2 reduction is methanol. Methanol has proven to be a difficult product to selectively produce through homogeneous electrocatalysis. Recent work has shown that through homogeneous cascade catalysis, CO2 can be selectively hydrogenated to form methanol. Here, we describe progress toward cascade electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to methanol.
