In recent years, metal-free catalysts have attracted increasing attention as an alternative approach to overcome the most common issues of transition metal catalysts such as high cost, toxicity, and low abundance issues. In our group, we have focused on enhancing the redox active ability of boron-based clusters as an alternative to gain the transition metal type reactivity. Fundamental idea of the study is to synchronize the electron donor ability of phosphine derivatives with the electron acceptor ability of <i>ortho</i>-carborane to construct a new carboranyl phosphine cluster to mimic the metal behavior as a whole compound. Herein, bond activation of various classes of small molecules by the carboranyl phosphine clusters will be presented.
