Nanotechnology is the new frontier of the biomedical field that promises drastic new advances in treatments and technology. Metallic nanoparticles composed of metals with high x-ray attenuation factors may have utility as contrast agents and in radiation therapy. Among such metals, bismuth is promising as it has a long pharmaceutical history, demonstrated biocompatibility, and is considered to be non-toxic. However, much remains to be studied on the interactions of bismuth nanoparticles with biomolecules. Our project seeks to synthesize and characterize novel bismuth nanoparticles with long shelf lives and probe their interactions with proteins.
