Antimicrobial peptides of the membrane active peptide class are well-known for their potent activity. Few of these peptides, however, have found their way into effective therapies. Worse even, these peptides my not be as impervious to microbial resistance as once thought. Given these factors, we have been exploring in the 3B (Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biomaterials Engineer) Lab novel methods in which antimicrobial peptides can work in synergy with existing mechanisms. These techinques involve the use of light, enzyme inhibition, and reactive oxygen species. Taken together, we suggest a paradigm shift in the development of antimicrobial therapies: away from single molecules, towards additive/synergistic approaches.
