Organic ligands containing Schiff-base functionality have been of recent interest in the areas of medicinal chemistry and industrial catalysis. Certain metal complexes of these ligands have the potential to exhibit biological activity, as well as the ability to catalyze a variety of reactions in organic synthesis. A series of three polydentate N-oxide ligands, the bidentate poxbim ligand, the tridentate poxpam ligand, and the tetradentate poxphen ligand (Scheme) and their respective metal complexes have been chosen to be synthesized due to their similarities to anti-inflammatory agents, industrial catalysts, and enzyme active sites. We are presenting the optimized synthesis of the target ligand poxphen and its Cu(II) complexes using template synthesis and reactions in an inert argon atmosphere together with structural characterization of all compounds.
