Schiff-base ligands (SBLs) are broadly used polydentate ligands in coordination compounds studied for their biological activity, catalysis, magnetic properties, the development of sensors, and many other potential uses. SBLs with N-oxide moieties are less common. In all known cases, the N-oxide functionality has been introduced via a condensation reaction between an N-oxide aldehyde, such as 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde N-oxide and various amines. We are introducing the first SBLs with N-oxides originating in amines, such as 2-aminopyridine N-oxide and 2,6-diaminopyridine N-oxide. Synthesis and spectroscopic and structural characterization of the ligand N-oxide building blocks, final SBLs, and the first examples of their Cu(II) complexes will be presented.
