Thermal expansion refers to the property that most materials exhibit, which is how their overall volume changes as a function of temperature. Some materials exhibit the exotic property negative thermal expansion (NTE), meaning they contract when heated. The addition of NTE materials to pre-existing technologies could allow for the control of thermal expansion, as well as the reduction of damage caused by uncontrolled thermal expansion. Several materials in the A2M2O7 family, where A = transition elements and M = P and V, exhibit negative thermal expansion, yet little work uncovering the specific role of the M site identity exists. This experiment will focus on synthesizing several members of the Zn2V2-xPxO7 solid-solution in order to study their negative understand and investigate controllability of thermal expansion as a function of M site identity. Presented will be the synthesis, characterization, and, temperature-dependence of structure in this family.
