In this talk, I will discuss how combined Time-Resolved X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (TR-XES) and Time-Resolved X-ray Solution Scattering (TR-XSS) experiments have allowed us to unravel the detailed dynamics following photo-excitation into both short- and long-lived MLCT states in a series of Fe-centered complexes. This will be complemented by a presentation of recent simulation results (SHARC approach) shedding light on the important role and the structural dynamics of the solute-solvent interactions in these systems, and how the new possibilities of utilizing high energy X-ray scattering (E<sub>Xray</sub> = 18-25 keV) can further contribute to the detailed characterization of ultrafast structural dynamics in photo-excited molecular systems.
