Nearly all microbes require iron for growth. Ferric iron is characteristically insoluble under most environmental conditions, thus reducing its bioavailability. In response to low-iron environments, microbes often will produce siderophores as an iron acquisition strategy. Genome mining efforts allow for targeted identification of siderophores produced by nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS). In this work, a genomics approach is applied to screen through microbial genomes for discovery of siderophores which incorporate nonproteinogenic amino acids as Fe(III) binding ligands. The identification of siderophores with diazeniumdiolate ferric iron binding ligands will be presented, including insight into their biosynthesis and photoreactivity.
