We have performed a systematic study of the oxygen transport membranes (OTMs), La0.9Sr0.1Co1-yFeyO3-δ (y=0, 0.25, 0.75, 1), via in situ neutron and synchrotron diffraction. OTMs are interesting for their broad application in removing oxygen from the air for medical and industrial applications, chemical looping applications, and three-way catalysis incatalytic converters. While it is well known that OTS materials exist, the understanding of mechanisms of atomic motion is limited, but the key to the rational design of new materials. We will present the success and limitations of using in situ diffraction to probe structural changes in La0.9Sr0.1Co1-yFeyO3-δ (y=0, 0.25, 0.75, 1) at industrially relevant conditions. We will also discuss the results of data mining on oxides that have been explored for oxygen transport properties and how this has allowed us to draw conclusions about mechanisms of oxygen motion. Furthermore, we will discuss how both in situ diffraction and data mining are being used to inform the rational design of OTMs.
