Since their introduction, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have seen a dramatic rise in appearance across many research sectors owed to their extensive customizability. These nano-sized particles, with their ability to act as catalytic centers, delivery platforms, filters, and gas storage cells, allow researchers the unique ability to create particles tailored for a variety of highly specialized purposes. Due to their overall positive charge as a result of their metal ion centers, MOFs have been shown to be an excellent surface for deposition of polymeric coatings. One such coating being the polymer Heparin. By combining the platform of MOFs with the layer-by-layer drug coating, we seek to create a novel method for enhanced and long lasting drug delivery. In this work, we use the MOF PCN-333 as a substrate to examine the effects of polymeric layer-by-layer deposition on standalone MOF particles using Heparin and Polyethyleneimine and show their surprising efficacy over 60 days along with its promotion Human Schwann cell growth leading to an increase in cell viabilty by over 15%.
